Ice Hot Nordic Dance is an international platform and event presenting cutting-edge Nordic contemporary dance to hundreds of international programmers. The organizers sought a new visual identity for the event, often held against the backdrop of the Northern winter landscape. The ask was to highlight Nordic nature in the visuals, as well as embody the event’s ability to bring light to the darkness and create a uniquely warm atmosphere despite the cold winter.

In response to the themes of Nordic dance and nature, the visuals and colors of the new visual identity are inspired by Nordic natural wonder of the aurora borealis, the northern lights dancing in the winter sky. The juxtaposition of hot and cold, bold and delicate has been translated into the typographic treatment and a memorable logo that can live on its own strongly when required but also quickly become inviting and lively when the illustrations and animations start to come into play.

The primary typeface Labil Grotesk is a quirky sans serif with tilting and rotation that plays with the themes of balance, gravity, movement and self-expression, hence reflecting the nature of contemporary dance and the platform itself. Together with high contrast Orelo, the typefaces position the visual identity for a modern audience, while the illustrations are endlessly adaptable creating visual variation throughout different touchpoints.
