The Wild
Mushroom Cookbook

The book design and 15 mushroom illustrations for Villisienikeittokirja (The Wild Mushroom Cookbook) were created for Finnish chef and food writer Sami Tallberg, known for his expertise in foraging and wild food.

The brief called for a design that was “psychedelic, magical, and elegant”. The result is a bold and energetic book featuring vivid illustrations and a dynamic color scheme —a visual reflection of Tallberg’s vibrant personality. Each chapter has its own unique color combination, structuring the book while complementing the natural hues of the mushroom and recipe photography. Shades like pale pink and forest green were carefully chosen to enhance the appeal of the dishes while maintaining a visually rich and immersive experience.

Alongside recipes, the book includes key identification details for each mushroom, catering to cautious Finnish foragers. While the illustrations embrace a psychedelic aesthetic, the photography by Olga Poppius takes a more refined approach, using moody, dark-toned images to highlight the richness of the dishes. The interplay of colors, illustrations, and photography creates a captivating yet functional design, making the book both visually striking and practical for readers.
