Mikkeli’s
Illustration Triennial

Mikkeli’s 12th Illustration Triennial celebrated the premier works of Finnish illustrators, highlighting the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary illustration. The challenge was to create a visual identity that encompassed the diversity of styles and genres represented in the exhibition while maintaining a cohesive and recognizable system.

The concept was inspired by one of the most fundamental elements of illustration – the brush stroke. A single stroke can convey mood, movement, and texture, serving as an illustrator’s personal signature. This idea became the foundation of the visual identity.

In the brand mark, the letter “M” was designed as a brush stroke, symbolizing both “Mikkeli” and the individuality of each illustrator. Multiple variations of the brand mark reflected the range of illustration styles featured in the exhibition, from expressive paint strokes to precise vector work. Adding a sense of playfulness and adaptability, the changing brush stroke became a bold, repetitive graphic element throughout the identity.

A minimal black-and-white palette acted as a neutral backdrop – like a blank canvas – allowing the vibrant, diverse illustrations to take center stage while reinforcing the identity’s refined and contemporary aesthetic.

The final identity not only honored the richness of Finnish illustration but also created a dynamic and flexible system that celebrated artistic expression in all its forms.
